In fact, the only time it can be dangerous is when it accidently hits you with its huge tail. But the Whale Shark doesn't only eat plankton. It will also eat small fish on occasion. There are only 3 sharks that filter-feed. The 3 filter-feeding sharks include the Whale Shark, the Basking Shark and the Megamouth Shark.
