This is a vintage John Warden black velvet suit featuring early 70s mod styling. The jacket is made with peaked lapels and has a four button closure in a double breasted configuration. The shoulders are padded and there is a patch pocket built onto either side, but no chest pocket. The sleeves have single button cuffs, and the back has no vent. The pants have a flat front, a pocket at either side, a wide waistband and have a wide leg. The jacket is fully lined in a cherry red viscose fabric. Please note that the jacket was too small for my mannequin, so I had to pose it unbuttoned and then flat, so the photos don’t do it justice. Age: 1973-1976 Label: John Warden Boutique Montreal. John Warden was an important Canadian fashion designer, a graduate of the Parsons School of Design, New York. He created collections for a number of major Canadian manufacturers during the 1960s, and for major events such as Expo 67 and the 1976 Summer Olympics as well as uniforms for corporations such as Air Canada and Bell Canada. He opened his first boutique in 1966 and his first men’s clothing boutique in 1968. Union label: ACWA label used between 1962 and 1976. Material: 100% Cotton Sizing: This is a small size. 38 is indicated but this is a vintage size and I think that this is more a size 36 with a pant waist of 32”. Please rely on the following measurements for fit, taken from the exterior (please take the thickness of the fabric into consideration), as well as the style of the jacket and pants: Jacket: Shoulders: 16 1/2” across shoulder seam-to-seam Sleeves: 25” from shoulder seam Sleeve Inseam: 17 1/2” long Chest: 40” around, taken under the arms - in my experience, true size is usually 4” smaller than the chest measurement, so maybe a size 36 Waist: 33 1/2” around Overall length: 31”, measured flat Pants: Waist: 32” around Leg Inseam: 31 1/2” long Overall length: 40 1/2“ Condition: This suit is in very good condition with no wear, tear, stains or odors - maybe a couple of small marks to the velvet, really nothing. Otherwise, this suit looks like it saw little use and was very well kept over the years. This is a wonderful example of early 70s mod styling by a celebrated Canadian fashion designer!
