BRIEF HISTORY OF THE GURKHA PANT In short, Nepalese Gurkha soldiers were recruited by the British army after a display of great strength and skill during battle in 1814. Their army was 6 times smaller than the British, but they held out much longer than anticipated due to their stamina and knowledge of the terrain. The British struggled as they were not used to the heat and unfamiliar territories, and as a result their weight fluctuated.
