Hunt had moved from the Hesketh team to McLaren, taking the place of dual World Champion Emerson Fittipaldi who had moved to drive for his brother Wilson's Fittipaldi team for the season. The six-wheeled Tyrrell P34 confounded the skeptics by winning in Sweden. Lauda had a massive crash in West Germany and appeared likely to die from his injuries, but miraculously he returned to finish fourth in Italy. In the last race in Japan, Lauda withdrew because of the hazardous conditions and Hunt eventually finished third to take the title.
